It’s the last day of April and the beginning of a new week. As the days, weeks and months fly by, I am grateful for this little gratitude challenge that helps reset my focus for the moment.
I really had to think hard for this week’s challenge, which is to talk about something I’m good at.
I’m OK at a lot of things. I can do a lot of stuff that would get a ‘pass’ mark. Most of it would be an average score, though, and not exceptional. For instance, I can cook and follow a recipe just fine, and most of the time my meals turn out fine. But I am not passionate about it, it doesn’t drive me like it drives others. So I don’t put my energy and focus into learning more or perfecting techniques.
There are lots of things I love doing, but I don’t think you can be good at them. Like reading. Can you be a good reader? Can you be a good leisurely walker? A good bird feeder? A good music listener? A good sunrise watcher?
I asked my husband to help me figure out something that I’m really good at. Without hesitation he said I was a good writer.
I love to write, but am I good at it?
I recently changed my career path so that my focus would be around writing. It has been the best thing I’ve ever done. I can easily sit at a desk and write for eight hours, as long as there’s coffee at hand. When I’m writing at work, I’m solving problems, I’m connecting with others, I’m opening up possibilities, and I’m making the world a fairer place.
I’ve contributed to articles in academia and while it’s been hard work, it’s always been personally rewarding to be able to write about the good news stories directly attributed to work I’ve done in the non-writing world.
Outside of work and study, there’s limited time to write for fun these days. All my old blogs full of my creative writing and personal anecdotes are gone. No one really puts pen to paper to write letters anymore, but somewhere out there, in a recycling heap, there’s hundreds of letters full of stories and poems that I’ve written to friends.
So I suppose I am good at writing, even if I may not necessarily be great at it. I love it, all the same.
Is there anything unique you’re good at? I’d love to read about it in the comments!
